DIY Headlight Restoration: Step-by-Step

🧽 What You’ll Need:

• Headlight restoration kit (or sandpaper in varying grits: 400, 800, 1000, 2000)
• Microfiber cloths
• Painter’s tape
• Plastic polish or UV sealant
• Spray bottle with water
• Car wax (optional)

🔧 Step 1: Clean the Headlights

Wash the headlight lenses with soap and water to remove dirt and grime. Dry them thoroughly.

🔧 Step 2: Tape Around the Headlights

Use painter’s tape to protect your vehicle’s paint around the edges of the headlights.

🔧 Step 3: Sand the Surface

Wet sand the lenses starting with the lowest grit (400) and work your way up to finer grits. Keep the surface wet while sanding, and move in consistent back-and-forth motions. This removes the oxidized layer and evens out the surface.

🔧 Step 4: Polish

Apply plastic polish with a microfiber cloth or a polishing pad. Buff in circular motions until the lenses start to look clear again.

🔧 Step 5: Seal and Protect

Use a UV protectant or clear coat sealer to protect the headlights from future oxidation. This step is key to keeping them clear longer.

Apply a layer of car wax for additional protection and shine.
